I love that your daughter is so involved and enjoys canning! My daughter does as well. I hadn't thought to have her invent names for the canned items. I'll do that in the future. She also has food allergies and so does her brother. Since we've been eating local/organic/nothing pre-packaged, it's a lot easier.

It's because of our new lifestyle that our daughter is loving the Little House on the Prairie series as well and is enjoying the American Girl books even more.

It sounds like your daughter is very connected with you and very down-to-earth. I love that.

Thanks for the beautiful post!

Thank you Rebekah. You were a hard act to follow! Your photographs were especially wonderful. It's been so fun to see all these references to canning in our books and say, "Hey! We do that too."

Jenna, thanks so much. There are food safety issues with canning, so it is best to follow good instructions. A great resource is the Ball Blue Book of Preserving, but there are many other resources listed on the blog. As I mentioned, I am still a beginner myself and I was nervous at first, but it is really quite straightforward once you actually do it. Best of luck to you.

Emily, you have inspired me to try canning! What a beautifully written piece! Do I need to be concerned about food safety issues? I need a primer, I'll google away!

What a lovely post! We often read Blueberries for Sal in our house, and also love having the pictures suddenly feel relevant to our own lives.
