Can-It-Forward Day Demo Schedule

In our third season of spreading the love for “putting up” food, Canning Across America is cooking up its most exciting endeavor to date. Mark your calendars for the weekend of August 13-14, when Canning Across America will be preserving up a storm at Seattle’s Pike Place Market.

As part of the first-ever National Can-It-Forward Day, Canning Across America members will teach the basics of water bath canning and some of the most popular summer canning recipes. The day-long event is free and open to the public and will include several how-to canning demos that will be streaming live on FreshPreserving.com 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM PST. Viewers will be able to ask questions and post comments in real time.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 14, 2011 SCHEDULE

The preserving celebration continues Sunday, August 14, with more free and open-to-the-public demos from Seattle’s most seasoned canners. It also marks the kick-off to Canning Across America’s third Can-a-Rama, a week of home canning parties and seasonal preserving nationwide.

Pickle Jalapeno Chile Peppers by renowned pickle expert Lucy Norris

Seattle, WA Canning Classes Coming Up

This weekend will be a busy one with canning events and classes in Seattle!

On Saturday, September 12th, Seattle Tilth is hosting a Canning Class/Demonstration at the Seattle Tilth Harvest Festival at the Good Shepherd Center, 4649 Sunnyside Ave N, Seattle, WA 98103.  This one starts promptly at 10:35–doors close then, so don’t be late.  It is free and no preregistration is required.

Also on Saturday, September 12th, Families Preserve and Prosper, Sue Miller, and Briana Barrett will host a canning workshop for parents and children near the Woodland Park Zoo.  Time: 6-9pm Cost is $60 for adults and is free for kids

Also on Sunday, September 13th, City Fruit hosts a class with Master Preserver Shannon Bailey at 2:30, at the Greenwood Senior Center, 525 N. 85th St., Seattle, WA 98103.  The cost is $25.

Today’s Highlighted Event — Canning Demo in Seattle

Amy Pennington (Go Go Green Garden) is back at the canning kettle, sharing her preserving smarts, this time at the Lake City Farmers Market, at 4 p.m. Amy was featured in “Reader’s Big Ideas” in the July issue of Sunset Magazine.

Just a few spots left for Canning Basics class in Seattle

Learn just how easy it can be to make and can a batch of jam from scratch at the Canning Basics with Marisa McClellan: Fruit Jam class.

If you’ve never done any canning because you think it’s too complicated, this class will change your mind and your pantry forever. Each student will head home with the knowledge they need to make their own jam (as well as a small jar of the jam made in class that day). Marisa is a food writer and cooking instructor from Philadelphia, PA who is coming to the Seattle-area to participate in the Canning Across America weekend.

Join us in Seattle at the Queen Anne Farmer’s Market for a canning demonstration by Sonja Skalbania, Master Food Preserver, from 5:45 to 6:45 pm.  Canvolution members will be there! Kim O’Donnel, True/Slant writer and co-founder of Canning Across America, will be there from 6-7 pm to answer questions and give ideas. Join us!
