Guess I missed a good one again. LOL... My father in law lives in NC.. and afraid to can tomatoes...he remembers when his mom...she's 91 now... would put up tomatoes and lose maybe 3-4 per dozen... I think he needs to remember that preservation recommendations are quite different now... But good story to hear him talk about the old times.

Years and years ago I helped my mother make fig preserves! I was jar wipper! She is gone now and the memories are wonderful. A couple of years ago I looked in the backyard and noticed the birds chowing down on figs. I thought then well it seemed easy to do with my mother sooooooooooooo.....I found all the canning stuff, replaced some and found the recipe. Now I look foward to July and the fig season. Seems like Mother is standing right there with in the kitchen and also helping pick the figs. I give the preserves as gifts during the year and at Christmas. Oh one thing I remember is Mother said to always share....with friends, neighbors and the birds!!!! We leave the figs at the top of the tree for the birds!!!!!! LOL

When I was little, I used to help my mom make fig jam with the figs we got from our fig tree in the back yard. We would also make pickles...a favorite in our household! I haven't done canning since then and now that my mom has passed I would love to get back into it and share the experience with my son. I have NO clue what I am doing so winning this starter kit...or anything for that matter...to help get me started is greatly appreciated!! :-)

I teach canning to my church group and also at a heritage home/ museum. There is a real surge in people wanting to know the traditional ways. They can't learn from their own parents. The knowledge has seemed to skip a generation. I'm so glad These skills aren't endangered anymore.

My daughter began to have cardiac arrythmias when she about 2 years old, and we learned about six months later that she had an MSG allergy, the one thing they put in most preserved/canned goods. I quickly learned to home can using the Bar Jar book, and I absolutely love the things I make without MSG and a lot of salt. Thank you Ball for helping me make my family safe all these years....and they make great presents too!

I remember many hot summer and fall days standing in the kitchen canning with my mother and sisters whatever daddy brought home at the end of his working day. Peaches, pears, tomatoes, beans, corn, to name a few but mostly jars and jars of jams and jellies. Now I am a mom and grandma and I share the tradition with my daughters, sons and young grandchildren. Even the youngest at 5, can sort lids and put them with the right size jar! It gives us time together doing something we will all enjoy later in the year!

I've always wanted to can some kind of fruity, savory chutney - to put on bread or be the easiest dinner ever (just pour over chicken and cook!) - maybe this year!
